George Leroy VanDyke's Obituary
George Leroy VanDyke (Papaw) of Longview, TX, 82, went home to be with his heavenly Father on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at M.D. Anderson Leukemia Hospital surrounded by his family. Leroy was born in Marshall, TX on June 29, 1935 to Reagan and Imogene VanDyke.
Leroy was a member of Mobberly Baptist Church for 50 years where he served as a Deacon. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Ann Heflin and graduated from Marshall High School where he played Varsity Football.
Leroy enjoyed golf, gardening, and socializing with various groups. He enjoyed fellowship with “The Friends” Sunday school class where he served as co-social chairman. He enjoyed their “42” card group and his “old” friends dinner parties. He also enjoyed learning and playing the guitar and hosted other musicians to play music.
His most treasured moments were with his family. He especially enjoyed the holidays, birthdays, Cowboy games and any opportunity to be with his beloved family.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Reagan and Imogene VanDyke.
He is survived by his beloved sweetheart of 62 years, Nancy, his daughters; Michele Gibson and husband Robert of Tyler, and Kim Oden of Longview. Grandchildren; Tiffany Miller and husband Preston of Houston, Trevor Gibson and wife Lindsey of Katy, Zach Oden of Longview, Austin Oden of Kemp, and Jake Oden of Lubbock. Leroy is also survived by his great grandchildren; Avery and Stella Miller and Tyler Gibson. His brothers; Glen, Bobby, Garland and their spouses, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special sister and brother-in-law, Donald and Peggy McCarty.
Funeral services for Leroy will be at Mobberly Baptist Church on Friday, August 25 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will take place after the service has concluded at the church.
