Garland Baldwin's Obituary
Sammie Garland Clawson Paine Baldwin, 97, of Longview passed away February 26, 2013. She was born October 22, 1915 in Dallas, to the late Salmon McKay Smith and Thomas Garland Clawson. Garland was raised in Dallas, Texas and graduated from TWU in Denton, Texas. She was very artistic and while working in Dallas at the Cokesbury Book Store she and a friend illustrated and published a book.
Garland married Henry Carlton Paine and they had one son, Stephen Henry Paine. Henry preceded Garland in death in 1960. She then married Kenneth Baldwin, Sr. and they lived in Longview where Ken worked for Texas Eastman.
Garland was a very unique and intelligent individual. She was a member of the Hughey Crest Garden Club and was a diligent horticulturist. Her garden was always filled with the latest and most distinctive types of plants. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Longview for 57 years. Her heart was always with the church and she served as a Deacon and Elder for many years.
The family is truly grateful for the staff at both Summer Meadows and Good Shepherd Medical Center for her care in the last days of her life.
Garland was preceded in death by husband, Henry Carlton Paine, and husband, Kenneth Edward Baldwin, Sr., and stepson, Kenneth Edward Baldwin, Jr.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Henry Paine and wife, Jan, and two grandchildren, James Randall Paine and wife Lindsay, and Stephen Patrick Paine and wife Robin.
Garland was blessed with dear cousins who were like family to her, and she is survived by them as well, Claire Smith Foster, Ann Lacy Crain and Nancy Rogers Smith.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 1 PM with Harry Meissner officiating. Burial will be in Memory Park Cemetery under direction of Rader Funeral Home.
