Frederick Paul Furman's Obituary
Services for Frederick Fred Paul Furman, 92, will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 14, at Winterfield United Methodist Church in Longview with the Rev. Gene Steger and Louis Meider, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Winterfield Cemetery. He died February 11, 2009, at his home in Longview.
He was born December 31, 1916, in Dewey, Oklahoma. He attended Duncan City Schools in Duncan, Oklahoma, and Longview High School.
From 1942-1945, he served in World War II in the US Navy SeaBees, a construction battalion. In 1945, he was honorably discharged as a Carpenter's Mate Second Class. He received the Purple Heart award after he was wounded in August 1943 on one of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. He also received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 bronze star attachment, World War II Victory Medal, Naval Reserve Honorable Discharge Button, and Honorable Service Lapel Pin.
He worked for Atlantic Richfield Oil Company, owned and operated a Longview service station, and retired from Modisette Oil Company. Following retirement, he and his wife worked for a number of years in the Mothers Day Out program at Winterfield United Methodist Church. He was a long-time member of Winterfield United Methodist Church, where he was a charter member of the Winmore Class. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a past volunteer for Longview Community Ministries. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time with his family and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his spouse, Mildred Blalock Furman; his parents, Fred and Effie Furman; one brother and six sisters.
Survivors include sisters Ruth Aldridge and Connie Jones, Longview; a number of nieces and nephews; one special needs niece, Denise Steele, Longview; and extended family, Ron and Bennie Brown, Longview; Kevin Brown, Henderson, Tennessee; and Karen, John, and Hannah Morris, Denton.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Brown, Ron Brown, John Morris, Don Blalock, Kyle Blalock, and Louis Meider, Jr.
Visitation will be at Rader Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Friday, February 13. Memorials can be made to Winterfield United Methodist, 2616 Tryon Road, Longview 75605.
