Fred Joseph Jacobs Jr's Obituary
On the late evening of March 19,2023, Joe Jacobs, aged 87, left us to be with the Lord. He was born to Fred and Susie Jacobs on the 5th of September 1935 in Fordyce, Ar.
Joe joined the Navy in May of 1954 and served 4 years. In 1958, after being honorably discharged, he attended Nashville Auto and Diesel. He received his certificate in welding and moved to Ft. Worth, TX. He worked as a welder for General Steele for 8 years. He moved to Houston for a brief time. He worked for the Texas highway department in the Material and Test Division. He moved back to Ft. Worth and worked for Trinity Steel as a welder. There, he met the love of his life, Linda Porter and they were married on Sept 5th, 1964, and a few years later started their family. In 1974, he moved his family to Fordyce, AR and he worked for Derby Oil Company as an area supervisor. When Derby Oil sold out, he decided to go into business for himself. After selling his gas station in the mid 80’s he went to work at Dallas County Hospital and worked in maintenance until his retirement in 1997.
He was an active member of First United Methodist church in Fordyce and later in Hallsville. He was also a member of the American Legion and was a member of the Fordyce Optimist club for 5 years serving as president for 1 year. In 1977 he received the Fordyce Optimist of the year award. For 4 years he worked with the Girl’s softball team sponsored by the Optimist club. He also served as city councilman for many years.
Joe will be remembered by everyone by his infectious smile, his hearty laugh, his kind spirit and generous heart and by all the many, many, many jokes and funny stories he told.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Susie Jacobs, his wife of 46 years, Linda Jacobs, and his sister Patsy Barmes. He is survived by his 2 daughters, Sonya Holman (David), Nancy Schwin (Ronnie) his 5 grandchildren, Jessica Schwin, Will Schwin, Madison Abuhatab (Abed), Haley Holman and Payton Holman.
A memorial service under the direction of Radar Funeral Home will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday March 28th at First United Methodist Church in Hallsville, TX with a visitation preceded the service at 1:00pm. Burial of his ashes will be at a later time at Stony Point Cemetery under the direction of Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce, AR.
