Frank H. Slade's Obituary
Celebration of Life services for Frank H. Slade, 79, of Longview, will be 11 AM Monday in the Chapel of the Rader Funeral Home, 1617 Judson Rd. with Revs. Sam Lanham, III, Sam Lanham, IV and Phil Jones officiating. Private family entombment will be held at Rosewood Park Mausoleum.
Mr. Slade was born in El Dorado, Arkansas on February 13, 1922 to Turpie and Edna Slade.
He attended public schools in Longview and graduated from Longview High School in 1938. He graduated from Baylor University.
Mr. Slade served in the United States Air Force as Sergeant Major for the 49th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force. His group was the leading air force group in the Asiatic Pacific.
Frank was awarded the following medals and ribbons: The Soldier?s Medal for Bravery, The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Northern Solomons Campaign Star, New Guinea Campaign Star, Luzan Campaign Star, Western Pacific Campaign Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star and Four overseas bars.
Frank married Bette Gough Slade after returning home from 3 years overseas duty, on November 18, 1945.
He entered business with his parents as partner in Turpie Slade?s Men and Boys Store and retired in 1982. He served in many offices of the Longview Jaycees as well as on the national level. A former member of the Cherokee Kiwanis Club and Elks, he served on the executive committee of the United Way, the board of First Christian Church, publicity chairman for American Cancer Society and fourteen years on the board of the Cherokee Water Company with terms as Vice President
and secretary. Mr. Slade was also on the Board of Directors of the Longview Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the First Christian Church.
Mr. Slade is survived by his wife, Bette, of Longview; children, Frank G. ''Chip'' Slade and daughter-in-law, Sharon C. Slade of Alvin, TX, Charles H. ''Chuck'' Slade and daughter-in-law, Ann B. Slade of Houston, TX; and granddaughter Hearin Gough Slade of Austin; Nieces and Nephews, Joe and Joyce Brooks of Marrietta, GA, Missie and Sam Lanham of Fredricksburg, TX, Dee Dee and Tom Howard of Dallas, TX, John and Judy Palmer of Stroud, Oklahoma and many other beloved family members.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 4PM until 5 PM.
