Dear Sammy and Sandra,

I have just learned of the loss of your mom. It is a great loss. I, like so many others have shared, simply adored Mrs. Satterwhite as a teacher. She was so articulate, animated, effective, and entertaining. I'll never forget being required to mark a circle around every "be" verb and then drawing a bumblebee above it. Or her story about having a pleasant look on your face for a photograph--remember to say "spruce" instead of "hemlock!" Her standards were high, to be sure, but we all learned as much as she could teach us! And I daresay that every student who had the good fortune to be taught by her had the gift of better knowledge of the English language and its structure than our peers. The knowledge that she instilled has served me well as a teacher and university professor and administrator over the years. Mrs. Satterwhite was a treasure!

Sandra and Sam: Mrs. Satterwhite was a gifted teacher and a beautiful lady. She made learning so enjoyable and exciting for everyone, and she was an enormous influence on my becoming an English teacher. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I have many found memories of being in her English class. One day we came to class and she was not there. We sat down and suddenly the closet door opened. Mrs. Satterwhite came into the room. She was bent over with her arms flapping in the air. We sat there with our mouths open. She proceeded to tell us that she was a "dangling participle". Her classroom was full of learning and laughter.

She touched so many lives and we were all blessed by her presence.

Sam, word of your mothers passing has reached us in Quitman. Losing ones mother is one of mortality's saddest moments. I never met your mother but I know you, a product of her acorn. She obviously was a woman of great faith with a mature love for her fellowman. Please accept our condolences.

I love the picture of Frances, it is beautiful. That smile reminds me of the fun and laughs we had at Judson Junior High. She was an old hand there when I joined the group of teachers. She taught me the ropes and also gave me advice on how to deal with principals, parents, etc. She gave me a baby shower at her home and my daughter still has the porcelain shoe that she china painted for her.
