Forest A. Walker's Obituary
Services for Forest A. Walker , 89, of Longview will be noon Monday, April 7th at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel, 1617 Judson Rd. with Rev. Kenneth Bowden officiating. Burial will be at the Noonday Cemetery. Mr. Walker died early Friday morning at his residence following a short illness.
He was born May 22, 1913 in Upshur County, Texas to Tom and Edna Harp Walker. At an early age, his family moved to Walkers Mill Community in Harrison County. In 1921, his family began operating a lumber business at this location. This community grew to a population of about 100 people and was known throughout the county as The Mill Grounds.
On February 12 1942, he went to serve his country in the U.S. Army in a communications unit. He sailed from New York on the Queen Mary and served in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Ardennes. He was honorably discharged in November, 1945 with four Bronze Stars, the WWII Victory Medal, and the Meritorious Service Unit plaque. On his return home, he again joined the lumber business. In 1958, he left the family business and began to operate the Highway 80 Fina Service Station. He retired from this business in 1985 and traded cattle for a number of years.
Mr. Walker is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dezzie Dillon Walker; a daughter and son-in-law, Nelda and Wade Kerr; a son and daughter-in-law, Don L. and Edith Wilson; three granddaughters and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Kerr, 5 brothers and a sister. Memorials may be made to the Valley View Baptist Church at 1602 Alpine St. Longview, TX 75601 or to a favorite charity.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon at the funeral home 2 to 4 PM.
