Floyd Eugene Bemis
Memorial services for Floyd Eugene Bemis, 93, of Longview will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2016 in the Rosewood Park Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Randall Bryant officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. prior.
Mr. Bemis was born October 5, 1922 in Geneva, OH to Frank and Mayver Bemis and passed away Tuesday, April 19, in Longview. He lived in Ohio and moved his family to Texas in the early 1950’s. He was a Methodist and was baptized March 30, 1958, at the Aldersgate Methodist Church in Arlington, TX. He loved to go on Cruises and would only go on the Princess Line. He has been on 20 plus cruises since 1995.
Mr. Bemis served in the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1946. He was a crew member on a PBY Sea Plane during WWII. After the war, he worked in various grocery stores as produce manager in Ohio and Texas. Then in the late 1950’s, he was a line manager for General Motors at the Arlington, Texas plant.
Floyd was a U.S. Postman in Arlington for about 14 years and received several awards for going above the call of duty and had set high standards regardless of their load. Due to an injury on the job, he was forced to retire.
Floyd and Virginia were members of a Square Dancing Club in Arlington. He was president of the Men Garden Club, Arlington, Vice President of Arlington Community Center. In 1991, Floyd and Virginia were selected Upshur County Senior Citizens of the Year. He was a member of Upshur County Hospital Auxiliary in Gilmer and volunteered at Upshur Manor Nursing Center. He also was a member of the Green Street Recreation Center in Longview and a member of several Bridge Clubs.
He was preceded in death of 58 years, Virginia Armstrong Bemis; son Bradley Bemis of Longview; brothers, C.L. Bemis of Corpus Christy, TX, Lyle Bemis, Glen Bemis, and sister, Dora Bemis all of Geneva, OH.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Doug Bemis and wife LeAnn and Mark Bemis and wife Sharron of Longview; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Bemis of Longview; grandsons, Brian Bemis of Plano, TX, Craig Bemis of Mansfield, TX, Thomas Bemis of California, Brad Bemis, Jr. of Seattle and Carl Bemis of San Antonio; 5 great grandsons; and 2 great granddaughters, Hailey Bemis of Mansfield and Jessica Bemis of Plano.
