FLOREID FRANCES STEVENS
Floreid Francis Stevens, beloved and devoted wife and mother, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in Longview, Texas. Born in Longview on February 3, 1938, Flo as she was known to her family and friends grew up in Longview and attended Longview High School, where she graduated in 1955. After graduation from high school, she attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where she graduated in 1959. After graduating from college, Flo returned to Longview and worked as a teacher at Bramlette Elementary from 1959 to 1962.
Flo was very active in the Longview community, including memberships in the Junior League of Longview, The Gregg County Medical Society Alliance President 1982-1983, The Longview Public Library Advisory and Foundation Boards, Gregg County Historical Foundation, and Longview Fine Arts Museum. For over 10 years, Flo was extremely active in the Texas Medical Association Alliance, serving as both Eastern Regional Vice President and as a member of the Executive Board. Flo was a proud member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority during her years at SMU, and continued as an active member of the Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club up until the time of her death.
Most importantly, Flo put responsibility to her husband, children, and grandchildren first. She was the proud wife of Dr. Alexander C. Stevens, to whom she was married for 48 years.
Flo was preceded in death by her mother, Eugenia English Tunstall Francis, and her father, Dr. Thomas Bramlette Francis. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Alexander C. Stevens; sister, Eugenia Francis Hovey and husband, Bob of Kansas City, Missouri; son, Alexander C. Stevens, Jr. and his partner, David Stitt of Boston, Mass.; son, Thomas Huxford Stevens and wife Bridgette, and children Laura Beth and Johnny, of Birmingham, Alabama; and son, Scott English Stevens and wife Lainey, and children Camp and Ella of Longview.
Those desiring to do so may make memorial contributions to the Longview Public Library or to the Gregg County Historical Foundation.
Services will be 12:00 o'clock noon Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Longview with Reverend Jonathan Jehorek officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Park under the direction of Rader Funeral Home.
