Burial will be in Rusk County Memorial Gardens under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Henderson.
Mrs. Gibson passed away Saturday, August 18, 2007. She was born April 18, 1912 in the New Hope community to Green Leroy and Sarah Elizabeth Williams, the sixth of seven children. She attended Henderson schools, graduating in 1930. Always a good math student, she took a business course which prepared her for a life of ?keeping books? in business and volunteer positions. She left her home town to work in Jefferson, Texas, until she married Vernon Gibson in 1933 and moved with him to Millville, not far from her parents? home.
She continued her career as bookkeeper for Vernon in the service station business for many years, and managed the U-Haul dealership in Henderson in her later years, retiring in 2000 at the age of 88. Continuing to raise cattle after leaving the business, she always wondered what people ?did? when they retired at 65.
Always willing to give of her time and ability, Evelyn served as treasurer of Millville Baptist Church for a long time, and became treasurer of Millville Cemetery Association in 1947, serving for 56 years until her retirement in 2003. She also served New Hope Baptist Church and the Hillview Senior Sunday School Class as treasurer, and was volunteer bookkeeper for the New Prospect Water Department for 32 years. She enjoyed visiting with the water customers when they came into her business to pay their bills.
Evelyn was a great cook, and prepared scrumptious dinners for the Gibsons on every holiday.Anytime there was sickness or a death in the community, she was there with a cake and a smile. She loved children, especially her great-grandchildren, and enjoyed choosing gifts for them or wrapping cash in unique packages. Besides being very generous, she was also very appreciative. Any gift or kindness was rewarded with a prompt thank-you note.
Mrs. Gibson is survived by her son, Lavern Gibson of Henderson; granddaughter, Denise White and husband Alan of Midland; grandson, Allen Gibson and wife Dede of Tyler; sisters-in-law, Betty Duran of Kilgore and IdaLeen Gibson of Henderson; great grandchildren, Austin and Laura Anne White and Kylar Gee; several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends, including caregiver Jerry Duncan.
