Evelyn M. Powell's Obituary
Services for Evelyn Monzingo Powell, 98, of Longview will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017 in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview with Pastor Mike Cook of Oakland Heights Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Winterfield Cemetery on Tryon Road. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Powell passed away Monday, March 20, 2017, at The Willows Nursing and Rehab Center in Kilgore. She was born November 7, 1918, at the home of her maternal grandmother in Harrison County to William Sellers and Maggie B. (Huffman) Monzingo. She grew up working on the family dairy, the oldest of three siblings. She attended Hallsville schools, graduating valedictorian from high school with her brother, less than 12 months younger, salutatorian of the same class.
Attending Texas Women’s College in Denton, Texas, she studied Home Economics for 1 ½ years until the sudden death of her father brought her college education to an abrupt end.
Her first employment was for the Superintendent of Schools in Marshall, Texas, follow by work as a teller at First National Bank of Longview. Later, Evelyn joined the Accounting Department of Texas Eastman. One of several employees selected and trained to open Eastman Credit Union, she eventually retired from this position with Texas Eastman.
A very important part of her life was her church, Oakland Heights Baptist Church, which she joined at its beginning. In addition to attending weekly services for prayer, worship and Bible study, she willingly served where there was a need. From adult Sunday School teacher to nursery worker, kitchen helper to committee member and many places in between, she enjoyed working with people for she truly had a servant’s heart.
Activities she enjoyed were playing Bridge, gardening, canning, picking summer produce, shelling peas by the bushel, watching the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers, family reunions, and taking trips with family or friends.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; brother, H.W. “Pete” Monzingo and sister-in-law Evelyn Cooke Monzingo’ her sister, Eloise Melton and brother-in-law, C. Raymond Melton; grandson, David Jason Powell, and niece, Kathy Melton Evans.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David C. and Carol Powell of Mt. Enterprise; daughter, Margaret Powell Minchew of Longview; grandchildren, Karen Powell Holland and husband Nathan of Henderson; Katherine Evelyn Minchew of Longview; Marcus David Minchew and wife Christina of Austin; Jonathan Andrew Minchew and wife Katharina of Austin; great grandchildren, Esau Powell, Levi Powell, and Kayley Allen, all of Bullard; Jonathan Holland and Grayson Holland of Henderson; Marcus Russell Minchew of Austin.
