Ethelyn Haywood Hickey Moore
The celebration of life of Ethelyn Haywood Hickey Moore , 90, will be 10 AM Saturday, November 15th at the First
Baptist Church in Hallsville, Texas. Mrs. Moore passed away Wednesday, November 12th , in Waco, Texas where she has lived with her daughter for the last two years. Ethelyn Hickey Moore was one of Hallsville's most loved and outstanding citizens. She was born in Hallsville June 30, 1918, to Chester Flourney Haywood and Margaret McClaran Haywood. Her father organized the First State Bank of Hallsville, founded C.F. Haywood Insurance Agency and was active in many areas connected with the early history of Hallsville. Her mother, an accomplished musician and piano teacher, passed the talent on to Ethelyn, who used her gift unselfishly for hundreds of weddings, funerals, and church services. She and her mother together, played the piano and organ for the First Baptist for a total of 75 years.
Ethelyn, and outstanding student at Hallsville High School, became Hallsville's first Basketball Sweetheart. After graduating from high school, she attended the College of Marshall East Texas Baptist and graduated from Baylor University in 1938. Her love for Baylor never ceased as she attended her last Baylor Homecoming game on Nov. 1, 2008.
In 1939, Ethelyn married Weldon Hickey from Hallsville. They lived in Austin, where he attended the University of Texas and then worked for the State Comptroller's office. Ethelyn and Weldon had one daughter, Elizabeth Kay. Ethelyn taught music, was pianist/organist for the church for 45 years, was a member of the Hallsville Study Club, was a founding member of the Hallsville Lady Lions and a director of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1984, she was selected "Citizen of the Year."
In 1975, Ethelyn lost the love of her live with the unexpected death of Weldon. In 1982, she married Dr. Eugene Moore and acquired another whole family with Dr. Moore's daughter, Annice and husband, Bud Lewis; granddaughter, Lora; and grandson, Dane. Gene and Ethelyn shared a joyful life together for seven years. He died in 1989.
Ethelyn's life was always centered on her church and community. She loved football, whether it was the Hallsville Bobcats, Baylor Bears or Dallas Cowboys.
Ethelyn's spirit of love, her joy of life, her faith in God and her endearing smile will be a part of all hr family and friends forever.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Margaret McClaran Haywood; father, C.F. Haywood; Husband, Weldon Hickey in 1975; and husband Eugene Moore in 1982.
She is survived by her daughter, Kay Metz and husband, Charles of Waco; granddaughters, Charlotte Henderson and husband, Ron of Waco, Kimberly Dang and husband, Joe of Houston and Margaret Henry and husband, Brian of Houston; grandson, Carey Metz and wife, April of Houston; and seven great-grandchildren, Matthew Dang, David Henry, Billy and Olivia Hendereson, and Everett, Canon, and Cole Metz.
In addition, she is survived by her beloved second family, daughter, Annice Lewis and husband, Bud of Gladewater, Texas; grandson, Dane Lewis and his wife, Lori of Gladewater; granddaughter, Lora Byrd and husband Mark of Carrolton, VA; and six great grandchildren, Nason, Chandler, Narci and Dane Lewis and Blake and Austin Byrd.
