Ethel Margaret Hensley's Obituary
Funeral services for Ethel Hensley, 94, of Longview will be held 10 Am Tuesday, May 31st at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Cunningham officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Ethel Margaret Hensley was born in Rhos, Wales, England on June 24, 1910, and died on May 28, 2005 in Longview. Mrs. Hensley was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Thelma Morgan Sunday School Class.
Working in the Longview Community as a volunteer is how Ethel spent a great deal of her time. She was a volunteer at Good Shepherd Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary for over 30 years and also volunteered at the Gregg County Historical Museum. She was a member of the 20th Century Study Club, Prelude, Longview Women?s Club, Longview Symphony Guild, Knife and Fork Club, Longview Federation of Women?s Clubs, Omni Travel Club, and the Garden Study Club. Mrs. Hensley was also honored by Texas Bank and Trust in the Longview News Journal?s ?People Who Make A Difference.?
In addition to the time she gave to her community, Ethel loved to travel and she traveled throughout the world. Her love of travel began early in her life. She made her first ?cruise? when she came to the United States from England at the age of three aboard the Lusitania in 1913. She lived in Kansas City for 17 years where she met and married Hickman E. Hensley in 1931.
That same year she and her husband moved to Longview, where they lived until 1944. After several years in West Texas, they moved back here in 1956. One other move took her away, but she settled here permanently in 1969.
Mrs. Hensley was preceded in death by her husband, Hickman E. Hensley and brother Kenneth E. Roberts. She is survived by her son, Kenneth E. Hensley and his wife Charlotte, her daughter, Sue Ellen Hensley, her four grandchildren, Kelly Hensley, Leigh Stillson and her husband David, Tracy Thurman and her husband Lance who are expecting her 4th great grandchild in July, Paige Medlin and her husband Kyle, three great grandchildren, Brendon, Colton, and Ryley Medlin, her sister-in-law, Virginia Roberts and two nieces, Jimmie Jean Johnson and Patsy Hensley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Society of St. Stephens, 400 N. Fredonia, Longview, Texas 75601 and to the Animal Protection League, 705 Gilmer Rd. Longview, Texas 75601.
