Ercel Ray Wheeler's Obituary
Ercel Ray Wheeler, 94, of Longview, went to heaven on July 18, 2024. Ercel was very proud of having been born and raised in Polk County, Texas where he grew up one of five boys. He was able to skip a grade and graduate at 16. Growing up in the country, Ercel wanted to see the world so near the end of WWII he joined the Army and was sent to Italy, which he loved.
Following his time in the Army he moved to East Texas where he met the love of his life. They married in 1953. Over time they welcomed a daughter and son. After working various construction jobs in Texas and Louisiana, the couple moved to Longview, Texas and Ercel went to work at Lone Star Steel where he retired after 25 years. He then, along with his wife, founded Ercel Wheeler Insurance Agency.
Ercel was a very strong Christian and a great example for Christ. He was known as a man of great character by family, friends and those that came to know him. The wonderful Christian example he set for his family and others is one seldom seen today. He was a proud member of Alpine Church of Christ in Longview for over 60 years. Always wanting to help others, he volunteered at the hospital, sitting with the sick. He also, volunteered for Meals on Wheels for over ten years.
Ercel always had an unquenchable thirst for learning and spent time reading and always asking the question, “how does that work?”. He loved maps and would spend hours studying and discussing them with others. He enjoyed traveling and learning about new places but also enjoyed staying at home where he could spend time with his many grand and great-grandchildren. Ercel took great care of himself, eating healthy and getting exercise. He had a passion for the outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed working in the yard - loving the feel of the sunshine on his face.
He lived his life by the motto of “God First” and “A job worth doing, is worth doing well”. Ercel recently celebrated over 71 years of a wonderful marriage and almost 95 years of life before God called him to heaven to receive his reward as a good and faithful servant. We rejoice in knowing now the “sun” on his face is the light of the Lord.
Ercel is survived by his wife of over 71 years, Wanda Jean Wheeler, daughter Becky Averett and Michael, son Steve Wheeler, grandchildren Heather Wisdom, Bryan Wheeler and Amanda, TJ Wheeler and George, Chad Averett, Taylor Wheeler and Maddie, Brandon Wheeler and Ashley, and Jeremy Averett. Great grandchildren Kaleb, Madisen, Nick, Janson, Grace, Esteban, Esmeralda, Vivian, Stormie, and Sage. Brother, Charles Wheeler and Sherry. Ercel loved all of his family and friends dearly. His family will miss the blessing he was to all of them.
