Elva Opal Cusick, 101, of White Oak, formerly of Flora, Illinois, went into the Lord's Everlasting Arms, Tuesday, December 29, 2009, with her loving family by her side, She was born February 3, 1908, in Lawrence County, Illinois, to Lorenzo Don Legg and Elizabeth Prand Legg.
Mrs. Cusick graduated from the Olney Illinois Sanitarium Nursing School in 1930, and moved to Flora, Illinois, where she worked for Dr. A. Paul Nanny for 25 years. During World War II, she taught several nursing classes and served for many years as the camp nurse for the Oil Belt Christian Service Camp. After her retirement from nursing, she worked for four years as a nanny, before moving to Texas in 1993.
On June 10, 1934, she married Everett Eugene Cusick. During their marriage, they had one child, Barbara Ann. She was a dedicated wife and mother. Her family remembers her kind heart and generous spirit.
Mrs. Cusick enjoyed organic gardening, volunteering, and excelled in her most notable hobby, crocheting. She took great pleasure in making afghans for all her family members and friends.
Mrs. Cusick was a member of First Christian Church for 49 years before moving to Texas, where she served as church secretary, sunday school teacher and member of the Ever Ready Sunday School Class. She also served as membership chairman for the Clay County Hospital Auxiliary. After moving to Longview, she joined Alpine Church of Christ. She volunteered at Caring and Sharing and was always willing to give of herself whenever she was called upon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers and their wives, Elvin and Chloe Legg, Leslie and Dorothy Legg and Leonard and Jemima Legg.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Ann Rapp and husband Paul "Butch"; granddaughter, Dana Phillips and husband Robert; grandsons, Richard Hill and wife Susan, and Thad Hill; several great-grandchildren; great-great -grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Visitation followed by a private memorial will be held at Rader Funeral Home, Longview, from 6-8 p.m. today, December 31, 2009. Burial will follow at a later date in Flora, Illinois.
A very special gratitude goes to the fourth floor nursing staff at Good Shepherd Medical Center, Texas Home Health Care Hospice and Highland Pines Nursing Home.
