Elaine Gibson's Obituary
Kathryn Elaine Gibson passed from her earthly home on April 7, 2026, holding the hand of her faithful husband and the love of her life of nearly 66 years. Elaine was born in Dallas, Texas, to Walter and Eva Butler on August 2, 1938. She graduated from Sunset High School in 1955 and then attended Abilene Christian College.
At ACC, she majored in accounting, was a member of the GATA Social Club, and enjoyed a vibrant social life while still graduating magna cum laude. During their senior year, she and Richard fell in love, and following her graduation in 1959, they were married on April 23, 1960.
After they were married, Richard and Elaine moved to Dallas, where Elaine worked at Peat Marwick. They later moved to Big Spring, Texas, where they soon welcomed their daughter, Camille. In 1964, Richard and Elaine moved to Longview, where they welcomed their son, Glen, and later their daughter, Arlene, completing their family.
Elaine was a beloved spouse and devoted mother, but her most joyful role was being “GiGi” to her six grandchildren. She delighted in cheering them on in all their endeavors and made every holiday and birthday a special and cherished memory.
She and Richard were faithful members of Alpine Church of Christ for more than 60 years, where they formed many lifelong friendships while joyfully serving others. Her home was always open for special gatherings and fellowship, and she was a gracious and thoughtful hostess. A cherished friend to many, her loving servant’s heart was a blessing to so many lives.
Elaine was a wonderful wife, mother, and friend because of her deep love for her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, and her sincere desire to follow Him. Her faith was not only something she professed, but something she lived out each day—with kindness, patience, and a gentle spirit. She found strength in prayer, comfort in Scripture, and joy in serving others. Whether offering a listening ear, a word of encouragement, or quiet acts of care, Elaine reflected Christ’s love in a way that touched everyone blessed to know her.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Allen Butler. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Richard Gibson, and their three children: Camille Gibson; Glen Gibson and his wife, Liz; and Arlene Mayes and her husband, Shawn. She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Rachel Gibson, Laura Gibson, Mitchell Mayes, Riley Mayes, Kelcy Mayes, and Meredith Mayes, along with many nieces and nephews. Her family brought her immense joy and remained central to her life.
Elaine’s enduring legacy of love and faith will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A casual, bright Celebration of Life will be held at the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 16, 2026. All who are present are welcome to join the family for a reception and a time of fellowship immediately following Elaine’s Celebration of Life at the family lake house.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the children’s homes she and Richard faithfully supported: Arms of Hope (Kerrville, Texas); Children’s Home of Lubbock; Sunny Glen Children’s Home (Harlingen, Texas); Children’s Home, Inc. (Paragould, Arkansas); Mountain States Children’s Home (Longmont, Colorado); Christ’s Haven Children’s Home (Keller, Texas); or Orphan’s Lifeline International (Kalispell, Montana), serving orphans in the developing world.
