To the Family of Edwin Hughes,

I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy to you during this difficult time, and let you know that I considered it a privilege to have known your departed family member.

It was back some twenty years ago that Judge Hughes came to Dallas and moved into the Manor House in downtown Dallas. We were neighbors for many years, and I have fond memories of the time we spent together. Often times we would go to ball games or just plain visit, and I appreciated his low-key gentlemanly approach to life.

You were all fortunate to have had a family leader who was always looking out for other people and helping them in any manner he could.

A life well-lived leaving behind a proud legacy that you can all look back upon.

Judge Hughes is deeply missed by all those who knew and worked with him no matter what their age or background. He was a sincere and hard working man who had a real heart for the human being in need. He always enjoyed finding a unique legal issue in a case especially one that called upon his civilian legal training in Louisiana. After the hearing was over he loved a well told joke or anecdote.

Ed loved his daily crossword puzzles. When I would visit I would look around for the daily crossword puzzle to see if there were any unsolved words that I could add. I think that he caught on to this because it became more and more difficult for me to find the puzzle when I visited. I miss my good friend Eddie Hughes. To me he was the "true Southern gentleman". My sincere condolences to the family of Judge Hughes. I am an immigration attorney who practiced in Dallas until 1990 and then moved to Houston. I had many cases over the years with Judge Hughes. I will always remember his (very dry) sense of humor. One day, many cases were set for 1:00 PM including one of mine. Judge Hughes was running late and did not take the bench until about 1:30. Don't know why, but that was very unlike him. When he entered the courtroom, all the chatter from the waiting attorneys and their clients quieted down. The courtroom was packed, SRO. Judge Hughes glanced at the clock, looked over at the clerk and said, calmly and with a straight face, "You need to get someone in here to look at that clock. It's about half an hour fast." Everyone broke up laughing. He will be missed.
