Edward Leon Cheeney, Jr.
Edward Leon Cheeney , Jr. passed away Sunday September 19, 2010. Mr. Cheeney was born September 12, 1939 in Houston Texas. He was 71 years old. Mr. Cheeney graduated from Liberty High School in Liberty, Texas. He also graduated Suma Cum Laude from East Texas Baptist University with a dual major in psychology and religion. He went on to obtain a Master's Degree with honors in psychology from the University of Arizona, a Master's Degree with honors in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Kentucky, and a Master's Degree with honors in Divinity from the Lexington Theological Seminary. He was ordained as a minister in the Disciples of Christ Christian Church, and he also attended Southern Seminary and was licensed Baptist Minister.
Mr. Cheeney devoted most of his career to public service. He has been honored by five different governors in three different states for his work with abused women and children, and later, with his work in the corrections department treating offenders.
Mr. Cheeney was the first chairman of the sex offender classification board, as well as the originator of the SED
Severely Emotionally Disturbed program for children, which is operational in thirty-eight states. He also developed and initiated psychological testing protocols which are in use by many states across the country.
Mr. Cheeney was married to the former Nora Jeane McManus. They have two daughters. In 1991 he married his current wife Marie, and she brought three sons in to the marriage.
He is survived by his wife Marie. Also surviving is daughters, Cynthia Ann Lovelace and husband Steven of Longview, Susan Alane Neugebauer and Timothy Tucker of Longview, sons, Shawn Vogel and wife Stacey of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Noah Vogel and Wendy Daniels of Longview, Adam Vogel and Laci Wheeler of Diana, and nephew Warren Cheeney and wife Linda of LaPorte.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Wesley Scott , Whitney and Doug Davis, Bryan and Kandice Scott, Lynsi Lovelace, Ashlea Neugebauer, Ryan Neugebauer, Matthew Vogel, Jessica Vogel, Jeff Vogel, Tommy Vogel, Joey Vogel, Marcus Carr, Dre' Carr, Kayla Vogel, Elizabeth Vogel, Aiden Vogel, and Anabella Vogel.
Great Grandchildren, Kaden, Symantha, Jakob, Bailey, and Cohen, Jadalyn, Lexi and Drake, grand nephews Chance and Chase.
Mr. Cheeney was preceded in death by his Father Edward Leon Cheeney, Sr. Mother Ethel and only sibling Gerald.
Funeral services will be held at Two O'clock PM Friday September 24, 2010 at Woodland Christian Church on FM 1844 with Reverend David Mays, and Reverend Dr. Jim Watson. Interment will follow in Rosewood Park Cemetery under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday September 22, 2010 from 5-7 pm.
Pallbearers will be John Neugebauer, Dr. Rick Earnest, Bryan Scott, Wesley Scott, Ryan Neugebauer, Timothy Tucker, Steven Lovelace and Warren Cheeney. Honorary Pallbearers will be Shawn Vogel, Adam Vogel, Noah Vogel, Tommy Vogel and Joey Vogel.
Mr. Cheeney made a difference in the lives of many people and the world was a much better place with him in it.
