Funeral services for Edith Baker Perry-Burks, 82, of Longview will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, October 16, 2001 in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview, with the Reverend Don Emmitte officiating. Entombment will follow in Memory Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Monday at the funeral home. Edith Baker Perry-Burks, known to many in the Longview area at the ''herb lady'', was born July 8, 1919 in the James community, near Center, Texas. She was a life-long resident of Texas, having resided in Longview for the last twenty-five years. She died Saturday, October 13, 2001 in a local hospital following a very brief illness. She was very involved in her community, having retired from positions of Home Economics Teacher in Carrizo Springs, Texas and College Station, Texas. She also was retired from the Home Extension Service of Gregg County. During the past few years, she wrote numerous articles for the Longview News Journal and authored a cookbook. She was a member of the Mobberly Baptist Church, where she served in the Prayer Ministry and as a substitute Sunday School teacher for the LAO-4 Class. She was also a member of the Iris Garden Club, the Country Patches Quilt Guild, and the Thursday Threaders. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 40 years, Dr. Bruce A. Perry in January 1989. Survivors include her husband, Willie Burks of Longview; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Don Emmitte of Weatherford, and Susan and Mark Mincey of Kilgore; brother and sister-in-law, O. T. and Pansy Baker of Austin; brother-in-law, Henry O. Allen of Victoria; step-son, Phil Burks and his wife Bobbie of Tyler; step-daughters, Joyce Boyle of Wichita, Kansas, and Shirley Schware and her husband Vernon of Newmanstown, PA; grandsons, Kyle Emmitte and his wife Brandy of Durham, NC, David Emmitte of Lubbock, Aaron Emmitte of Weatherford, and John Mincey of Kilgore; granddaughter, Jennifer Mincey of Kilgore; step-grandsons, Kenneth Schware of Denver, PA, Kevin Schware of Newmanstown, Jace Schware of Ephatar, PA, Thomos Brooks of Wichita, and Josh Burks of Tyler; step-granddaughters, Christine Weaver of Lebanon, PA, Corrinne Mentzer of Lancaster, PA, Jennifer Driskoll of Colorado Springs, CO, Amanda Burks of Azusa, CA, and Cindy Wright of Wichita; 10 step-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
