Dr. Rodney B. Martin's Obituary
Funeral services for Dr. Rodney B. Martin, 67, of Longview will be 12 Noon Monday, May 11, 2009 at First Methodist Church in Longview with Reverend Carl Lundberg officiating. Services are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Dr. Martin passed away Wednesday evening at Baylor Medical Center in a Dallas. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-8 PM at the funeral home, 1617 Judson Rd., Longview, Texas 75601.
Dr. Martin was born on September 27, 1941 in Alexandria, Louisiana. He obtained a Doctorate of Medicine from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1968. Dr. Martin did his Internship and General Residency at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas from 1968 to 1970. He then did his Residency in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Temple University Hospital and Chevalier Jackson Clinic in Philadelphia, PA from 1970 to 1973. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army upon graduation from college. He entered the US Army as a Major and served as a doctor in the Army Medical Corp at Ft. Hood Texas' Darnall Army Hospital from 1973 to 1975. He married his High School sweetheart, Virginia Self, in 1965; they have 2 children and one grandchild. He moved to Longview in 1975 where he has been in solo private practice of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery for 35 years. He served on the Board of Councilors in Medical Ethics of the Texas Medical Association for 18 years. He was a member of First Methodist Church for 37 years. Other than being an outstanding Doctor and friend to his patients, his hobbies were gardening and being a life- long student. He enjoyed reading and learning about science and theology. However, Dr. Martin's greatest passion was serving and shepherding others through practicing medicine. His children and one granddaughter were his great pride and joy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 44 years, Virginia Self Martin; daughter, Reverend Marlene Martin; son and daughter-in-law, "Beau" Rodney B. Martin, Jr. and Aaron Drum Martin; and granddaughter Olivia Martin.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Dr. Rodney B. Martin?s name to: LSU Health Sciences Center Foundation, 450-A South Clayborne Ave., New Orleans, La., 70112, to help with damages received during hurricane Katrina, or to the School for Little Children-First Methodist Church, 400 N. Fredonia, Longview, Texas 75601.
