Dr. Landon Armstrong Colquitt's Obituary
Graveside services for Dr. Landon Armstrong Colquitt, 83, of Longview will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Rosewood Park with Richard Colquitt officiating. Services are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Dr. Colquitt passed away early Saturday morning at his home.
He was born in Waskom, Texas, on January 23, 1926, and grew up there. After schooling in the Waskom Public Schools, he received a BA degree from the University of Texas in Austin in 1947 and an MD degree from the UT Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. After an internship he practiced general medicine in Odessa, Texas, until 1956 when he returned to Galveston for specialty training in orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Colquitt began practicing orthopaedic surgery in Longview in 1959. Later, with Dr. George Hilliard and Dr. W.K. Stephenson, he founded the Longview Orthopaedic Clinic Association.
As a member of the medical staff of the Good Shepherd Hospital, he served on most of its committees and was twice elected president of the medical staff. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Good Shepherd Hospital and served on its Board of Directors for two terms. Dr. Colquitt was a member of the Gregg County Medical Society, the Texas and American Medical Associations, the Texas Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Colquitt was the son, grandson, great grandson, and father of Doctors and felt that being a doctor was a near spiritual call. He strongly believed and tried to practice the aphorism that the doctor is to heal-sometime, to relieve-often, and to COMFORT ALWAYS. He often quoted a verse of the English poet Alexander Pope that "the greatest joy than man can gain is not from pleasure but in relief from pain".
For twelve years Dr. Colquitt served on the Board of Trustees of the Longview Independent School District and was twice elected to its presidency. He chaired the governmental affairs committee of the Longview Chamber of Commerce for three years. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church and a short term Rotarian.
Dr. Colquitt is survived by his wife, Eleanor; three children, Carol Colquitt Farmer of Dallas, Dr. Landon Colquitt and his wife Nancy of Kingsport, Tennessee, and Dr. John Colquitt and his wife Jane of Longview; six grandchildren and many friends.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, PO BOX 59, Columbia, Tennessee 38402, or to the Southern Legal Resource Center, PO BOX 1235, Black Mountain, North Carolina 28711-1235.
