Dorothy Telschow's Obituary
Dorothy Strong Telschow, 93, of The Woodlands, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2019 at Autumn Leaves Memory Care in The Woodlands, TX after a short battle with illness. Family Visitation will take place from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Rader Funeral Home, 800 Kilgore Drive in Henderson; Texas. Funeral services are scheduled to begin immediately afterwards at 2:00 pm. Burial will be at Old Prospect Cemetery in Mt. Enterprise, Texas, following the service.
Dorothy, also affectionately known as “Dottie”, was born on March 4, 1925 to Josie Norsworthy Strong and Beeman Bryan Strong at their home in the East Texas community of Sandflat. She was the fourth of eight children. After graduating from Mt. Enterprise High School in 1942, Dorothy moved to Houston and worked for Hughes Tool during WWII. She later worked at Gulf Publishing Company for 22 years in their accounting department.
It was at the Tin Hall Dance Club that Dorothy met the love of her life, Merrel Vernon Telschow. The couple eloped to Laredo and were married on March 1, 1947.She and Merrel were volunteers at the Alley Theater in downtown Houston, and they volunteered for over 20 years in the gift shop at Spring Branch Hospital. Dorothy was also a reading tutor for first graders at Spring Branch Elementary School next door to their home.
Dorothy and Merrel loved to travel the U.S. in their camper. Not only did they visit all 50 states, they traveled to many countries, including Cuba, Germany, the Bahamas, Italy, France, Mexico and Canada. Dorothy loved games and she and Merrel were the life of the party at family gatherings. Together they shared a great love for dancing. They were long time members of Bethel Church of Houston, and later The Woodlands United Methodist Church.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Merrel Vernon Telschow; brothers, Morgan “Monk” Strong, Charles Strong and Homer "Hap" Strong and sisters, Faye Risinger Hudgins, Francis Boyd Kieswetter, and Sarah Strong. She is survived by her; sister, Joan Pinkerton of Longview and numerous nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and great nephews.
Dorothy was an interesting conversationalist who never met a stranger. She deeply loved her family, and her loving kindness will be greatly missed.
Pallbearers are her nephews Mark Strong, Brad Strong, Joe Strong, Barry Strong, Kevin Strong, Gary Pinkerton, Danny Pinkerton, Johnny Risinger, Jim Boyd, and
Arlie Telschow.
