Dorothy Ray Green Morris' Obituary
Dorothy Ray Green Morris
Dorothy Ray Morris was born October 16, 1916, in Marshall to Joseph Herman Green and Delia Vern Taylor Green. She passed away December 13, 2013, in Longview. She was a fourth generation native of Harrison County, where she lived on the homeplace settled by her forebears until she moved to Longview in 1992.
Dorothy graduated the College of Marshall (now East Texas Baptist University) in 1937. She married Ivan James Morris, Jr. on June 27, 1937.
Dorothy was active in a number of organizations, including Marshall Business Women’s Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Harrison County Historical Society, Gregg County Historical Museum and Daughters of the American Revolution Aaron Burleson Chapter. She was a fifty-year member of the Marshall Chapter of Eastern Star. Dorothy was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Marshall for more than sixty years. When she moved to Longview, she joined First Baptist Church Longview, where she continued to hold positions of leadership in Sunday School and Baptist Women’s work for as long as her health permitted.
Dorothy’s beautiful handwork graces the homes of her descendants. Her cross stich, crewel embroidery and needlepoint always won a prize when entered in competition. She loved to cook, read, work crossword puzzles and play games with friends and her great-grandchildren. Most of all, she was a loving Christian lady who dedicated herself to faith in Christ and love of family.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, I. J. Morris, Jr., and two brothers, Roland and Thurman Green. She is survived by her only child, Carol Sue Morris Little, and her son-in-law, Robert W. Little, of Longview; two grandchildren, Joseph Ray Little of Pearland and Susan Little Hykel and husband Chris Hykel of McKinney; four great-grandchildren, Harrison and Nicholas Little of Pearland and Sarah and Nathan Hykel of McKinney and seven nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 16, 2013, in Ford Chapel of First Baptist Church Longview. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Atrium of First Baptist Church prior to the service. Family graveside committal services will be held at Grover Cemetery.
