Dorothy Ellen Shivers Clendenin
Dorothy Ellen Shivers Clendenin died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at the Pine Tree Lodge Nursing Center in Longview, Texas, at the age of 96. Affectionately known by her friends and family as "Dorrie", she was born on December 8, 1905 in Crockett, Texas, the first of four sisters, to James Shephard and Augusta Worthington Shivers. She attended Texas Presbyterian College and graduated from the University of Texas Austin in 1926. She married Arthur M. Clendenin in Crockett on June 15, 1930, and lived for the next 52 years in Detroit and Pleasant Ridge, Michigan. She also resided in Toledo, Ohio from 1982 to1988 at which time she moved to Longview.
Dorrie was a member of Gamma Phi Beta and PEO sororities, a life member of the American Association of University Women, a life member of the Society of Engineer?s Wives of the Engineering Society of Detroit, the Friendship Circle of Women?s Association of Woodward Avenue Presbyterian Church in Detroit and Circle 9 of Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church in Ferndale, Michigan. Also, she had belonged to Christ Presbyterian Church in Toledo, Ohio and was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Longview. She was extremely
active in these and other organizations often taking the presidency or other leadership roles. In addition she was active as a Cub Scout Den Mother and in the PTA organizations of both elementary and high schools of her children, also taking her turn as president of each.
Dorrie was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sisters Mary Shivers Waller and Augusta Shivers Thomas. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Carl Paulson of Wallkill, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Arthur M. and Judith Clendenin, Jr. of Sylvania, Oh; daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Paul Martin of Marshall, TX.; 7 grandchildren:
Arthur Clendenin, 111Mary Lou of Longview; Christine Clendenin of Aylett, Va; Nancy Jo DedererChristian of Homewood, IL.Ruth Ellen Clendenin of Richmond , VA; Robert MartinSandra Sloan of Lynchburg, VA; Jeffery MartinJill of Flower Mound, TX; Julia Martin of Orange, CA; and 7 great grandchildren: Diana, Lou Ellen and Amy Clendenin; Andrew Dederer, Zachary and Audrey Martin; and Benjamin Martin.
There will be no formal visitation. Graveside services will be held at noon, Tuesday July 2, 2002, at Evergreen Cemetery in Crockett, Texas with the Rev. Nancy Jo Clendenin Dederer offici-ating. The family request that there be no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church, Christ Presbyterian Church or the charity of the donor?s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
