Don Thomas Winans' Obituary
Don Thomas Winans, 80, of Longview, TX., died Sept. 26, 2017, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Martha (Coley) Stafford Winans.
The son of the late Donovan Edward Winans and Gladys Lorene (Worley) Winans Koonce, Mr. Winans was born and raised in McAllen, and graduated from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School in 1955. He attended Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University) before transferring to Texas A&M University, where he graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration.
He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves in the 1960s, working on early military computers.
He traveled widely, both in the course of his work and for pleasure. As a boy in McAllen, he went to Mexico many times. In the 1970s, he visited most countries in western Europe, making multiple trips to France. After retiring, he traveled to Australia, New Zealand and China.
Mr. Winans was a lifelong Christian. His faith contributed to his meeting his wife, whom he married in December 2013.
Mr. Winans was preceded in death by his parents and his only sibling, Holly Winans Asher of New York City.
Other survivors include two daughters, Vanessa Winans of Denton, Texas, and Lisa (Winans) Pearce of Myrtle Beach, SC; a granddaughter, Christiana (Musgrove) Smith of Frederick, Md.; and two great-granddaughters, Natalie and Carolyn Smith, of Frederick, both at home.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Alpine Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
