Don Bassett's Obituary
Luther “Don” Bassett, 89, of Henderson passed from this life on March 23, 2026, at Arabella Assisted Living in Kilgore, Texas. He was born in Henderson, Texas, on March 19, 1937, to Travis and Agnes Bassett and lived out his life in East Texas. He graduated from Henderson High School in 1955 and worked in his family’s store growing up. He spent years in the grocery business and later co-owned a store for a time. He worked as a press operator at Continental Can for over twenty years and then as a house painter well into retirement. Don was a devoted husband, father, Papaw, family member and beloved friend to many. He took the best care of his wife during her illness and was faithful to visit friends and loved ones who were home bound or in facilities throughout the years. Don and his wife, Delilah, enjoyed square dancing and playing dominoes, and he was always up for a game still until his vision failed him in the last couple years. Up until days before his passing, Don kept his quick wit, great sense of humor, and kind spirit. He was always genuinely interested in what was going on in the lives of friends and loved ones, and he never complained about much but had an outstanding attitude throughout life. He will be missed greatly. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Delilah Merle Bassett, his parents, Travis and Agnes Bassett, two sisters, Linda Wedgeworth and Becky Propes, and his first wife and mother of his sons, Carolyn Sue Kennedy.Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Randy Bassett, Allen Bassett (and Debbie), and step-son, Dwayne Smith (and Sharla); granddaughters, Hannah Duquemin (and Tommy), and Abbigail Smith; a grandson, Dalton Blaylock (and Noah); his brother, Mack Bassett (and Sybil); and a host of special cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the special sitters who cared for Mr. Bassett in his home for almost a year. We are so grateful for the extra time he was able to remain at home and for the sweet relationships that were developed.Pallbearers will be Keith Bassett, Gary Wedgeworth, Mike Neibert, Jeff Davis, James Freeman, and Charles Flanery. Honorary pallbearers are Dalton Blaylock and John Moore. Visitation will be held at Rader Funeral Home in Henderson at 1:00 pm on Friday, March 27, followed by funeral service at 2:00 pm with Michael Cary officiating. Graveside will immediately follow at Shiloh Cemetery.
