David Stewart's Obituary
David Stewart was born in New Jersey on February 12, 1937. He joined his loving wife, Peggy, in heaven on November 9, 2022. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his father William Stewart, mother Sue Spencer, brother William Stewart Jr., sister Caroline Jones and his grandson Stewart Linthicum.
David was a dedicated father to his four girls: Debbie Slaback (Fred Slaback), Donna Smith (Dale Smith), Susan Linthicum (Kevin Linthicum), and Carrie Snyder (Don Grindle).
He was a caring Poppy to Jeff Bass, Jason Bass, Jesse Smith, Jon Elia, Juliana Buchanan, Alexis Leatherman and Rebecca Kilfoyle, along with numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special friend Janice Upright.
David was a hard worker. Early in life he discovered if he wanted something, he would have to work for it. He was an innovator and driven in all that he did. He started his early years in a lumber yard and after learning and growing in his career, he was able to start his own business, David Stewart Construction Company. He operated a successful business from 1965 until he retired in 1998.
David also had a love for cars. From his first car, a 1954 Model-A, he restored countless cars, planes and buses. If it had a motor, he could fix it. He was an active member of multiple antique car clubs, and he participated in shows, tours and other events across the United States of America.
Along with his wife, they provided a wonderful home for their family. David and Peggy had many adventures and lived a committed, full and loving life together. Their adventures took them to 49 states, Canada and Mexico in 10 different motor homes over a period of 22 years. Because of their adventurous life together, David was always the life of the party with a story to tell or a quip to add to the conversation.
But he could not sit still. After traveling the world by car, plane and boat, he began volunteering at Trinity School of Texas. He spent almost 20 years volunteering at the school. Wearing many hats at Trinity School of Texas, he was known around campus as the hat man. He volunteered full time doing everything for everyone but his spent most of his time with the kitchen crew doing anything from serving lunch to the kids, repairs around campus and helping anyone who needed something done. He arrived every day at 6 AM but had to head home for his afternoon nap.
Everyone who knew David knew exactly where he stood. He was not one for mincing words. He could be gruff and cantankerous, but God had given him the spiritual gift of giving and he exercised the gift in many ways, including time, money and talents.
David was well loved and will be greatly missed by his family and those who loved and knew him.
A family directed Memorial Service will be 10AM, Friday, November 18, 2022, at Oakland Heights Baptist Church in Longview, with family visitation starting at 9AM.
