In Loving Memory of Sheriff Danny Rex “Hogdog” Pirtle
June 7, 1946 – July 17, 2026
Danny Rex “Hogdog” Pirtle, 80, of Henderson, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on July 17, 2026, surrounded by the place he loved most. Born on June 7, 1946, in Henderson, Texas, to Otis Garner Pirtle and Luna Eliza Minor Pirtle, Danny lived a life defined by faith, service, integrity, and an unwavering love for his family.
Danny’s career began as a welder, but his heart led him into a life of public service. After proudly serving six years in the National Guard, he began his law enforcement career with Rusk County. He later joined the Kilgore Police Department as a patrol officer, where his dedication, leadership, and investigative skills earned him a promotion to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), eventually serving as Lieutenant over CID.
Danny later returned to Rusk County, where he again served as Lieutenant over CID before being elected Sheriff of Rusk County. He faithfully served the citizens of Rusk County until his retirement in 2012. Throughout his distinguished career, he completed the Police Academy and continually pursued advanced law enforcement training, always striving to better serve and protect his community.
Among the many accomplishments of his career, Danny was especially proud of serving as the lead detective in solving the infamous Kentucky Fried Chicken murders in Kilgore, Texas—a landmark case that brought justice to the victims and their families and became one of East Texas’s most recognized criminal investigations.
Although Danny’s career was remarkable, it was his character that left the greatest impression.
Danny was a gifted craftsman who loved building and improving things. He took great pride in working with his hands and was always willing to help family and friends with projects around the house. The home Danny and Dolly built together became one of his greatest legacies—a place filled with love, laughter, family gatherings, and countless reminders of the work of his own hands. From laying the ceramic tile floors and building the back deck to creating beautiful custom shelves above the fireplace and throughout the home, running the water line from the lake to irrigate the yard, and building the rope-lined pathway leading down to the water, Danny’s craftsmanship can still be seen throughout the place they lovingly called home. Above all, it stood as a testament to the greatest gift of all: the life and love he shared with his beloved wife, Dolly.
Danny believed a handshake meant something. He was dependable, hardworking, trustworthy, and always willing to help someone in need. If he gave you his word, you could count on it.
He loved spending time outdoors—fishing, hunting, working in his shop, searching for a good bargain, and cooking what many would agree was the best brisket around. Family gatherings often included Danny’s legendary brisket, and those who knew him best can still hear him saying, “Dammit, Dolly!” or “Oh, sh*t!” followed by a grin that made everyone laugh.
Danny and Dolly’s love story began in the most unexpected way. As a young law enforcement officer, Danny was assigned the difficult task of serving Dolly with divorce papers—a first meeting that left Dolly less than impressed. Not long afterward, Dolly went to work as a dispatcher. When she was introduced to Danny, his eyes grew wide, though he tried to act as if they had never met. With a smile, Dolly quickly reminded him, “Oh, we’ve met before.”
As dispatcher, Dolly made it her mission to keep Danny busy, often sending him on calls that were a little farther out than those assigned to the other officers. After enduring her playful determination for a while, Danny finally asked if they could call a truce. Soon afterward, he brought her flowers, but then she didn’t hear from him again. Life took them in different directions, and Dolly eventually remarried. When that marriage ended, Danny reached out once more and began courting her. What began with divorce papers and a spirited dispatcher eventually became a beautiful love story that lasted 45 years. Together they built not only a home, but a life filled with faith, family, laughter, and unconditional love.
Danny was a faithful Christian and a member of Carlisle Baptist Church. His faith was reflected in the way he lived. He served others selflessly, loved his family deeply, and treated people with kindness, fairness, and respect.
Danny is survived by his beloved wife, Zefta “Dolly” Pirtle; his stepchildren, Charles Donald “Donny” McGill Jr. and wife Jessica, Scott Anthony McGill and wife Candice, and Shawn Aaron McGill and wife Vickie McGill; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Gerri Goodin and Annabelle Cates; and his brother, Dwayne Pirtle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis Garner Pirtle and Luna Eliza Minor Pirtle, and his brother, Otis Pirtle Jr.
A memorial service celebrating Danny’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, under the direction of Rader Funeral Home.

Danny wore many titles throughout his life—welder, soldier, investigator, lieutenant, sheriff, husband, father, Papaw, great-grandfather, and friend—but above all, he was a man of honor. Whether he was serving his community, helping a neighbor, or spending time with the people he loved most, Danny lived a life of integrity, faith, and quiet strength. Those who knew and loved him, both family and friends, will remember a man who kept his word, never hesitated to help others, and left behind a legacy of service, faith, and love that will continue to live on through his family, his friends, and the community he faithfully served.
