Dana Poovey's Obituary
Funeral services for Dana Tipps Poovey will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 7 at Rader Funeral Chapel in Henderson with the Rev. Bill Kuykendall officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Thursday at Rader Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery.
Born in Mooringsport, Louisiana, October 28, 1921 to Jake and Pearl Deason Tipps, she died March 5, 2008. She moved to Minden in the fifth grade where she met Odell Poovey whom she married after high school graduation. They celebrated their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary this past year.
Dan, as friends and family called her, was a homemaker for her husband, five children, and Mother who lived with her all of her life. She was an active PTA member for 26 years for all her children and taught Sunday School and Bible School for pre-school ages at First Baptist Church.
She welcomed everyone to her table and home, and there was no such thing as a lunch count. The neighborhood kids and friends played in the family yard, which became known as Pooveys' Playground. She treated them all like her own, which meant they followed her rules.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Evelyn Fitzgerald and Dawn Burgess; and sisters-in-law Nig Johnston and Annie Lawrence.
She is survived by her husband Odell Poovey; children Kay Nan Duran and husband John Lynn, Gay Allen, Jo Velvin and husband David, Jan Pirtle and husband Dwayne, and Don Poovey and wife Kelly, all of Henderson. Grandchildren are Clint Allen and wife Sarah of Houston, Adam Duran and wife Mandy of Carthage, Mandy Williams and husband Alan of College Station, Justin Pirtle and wife Jennifer, B.J. Poovey and wife Nicole all of Henderson, and Eric Poovey of Prescott, Arizona. Also surviving are five great –grandchildren and ten nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Bill Hedrick, Jim Young, Garry Parton, Tommy Gibson, Johnny Sproles and Al Whitehead. Honorary one include George Brady, Carl Sledge, J.W. Tennison, Don Deason and Glen Deason.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the March of Dimes, which was a special
charity to her as a polio survivor.
