Dan Hollis' Obituary
Funeral services for Dan Hollis, 84, of Henderson, will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, September 9, 2011 at the Rader Funeral Chapel with Revs. Lynn Loe and Mike Simpson officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Henderson.
Mr. Hollis died Tuesday, September 6, 2011 in a Longview hospital after a brief illness.
He was born September 18, 1926 in Burke, Texas to Melvin and Winnie McDougald Hollis. He was a WWII US Navy veteran and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church
Mr. Hollis began his banking career at the First National Bank in Groveton, Texas in 1945. In 1955, he became associated with the Oak Forest Bank in Houston. He served in various capacities and became president and CEO in 1965. In 1968, Mr. Hollis became president and CEO of the First National Bank of Henderson, later known as Republic Bank , Henderson. He later served as the bank's Chairman of the Board. He also continued in an advisory capacity for several area banks during retirement.
He served as past president of the Rusk County Chamber of Commerce in 1971 and served as director of the Chamber for many years. He was an original organizer and founder of the YMCA program of Henderson in 1972. He was also past president of the American Red Brangus Association in Austin. He was founder of the East Texas Red Brangus Association and also served as president. Mr. Hollis was a supporter of several Future Farmers of America FFA organizations in Houston and Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers.
Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Jo H. Hollis of Henderson; daughter, Kay Ramsey and husband Jim of Plano; sons, Danny Hollis and wife Sandra of Henderson, Philip Hollis and special friend Penny Reed of Tatum, and David Hollis and wife Tammy of Mt. Vernon; brother, Joe Melvin Hollis of Sweeney, TX., grandchildren, Chris Ramsey and wife Theresa, Matt Ramsey, Sarah McCready and husband Chad, Justin Hollis, Ashley Byrd and husband Chris, Carson Hollis and wife Jennifer, Cortland Hollis and special friend Tyler Esters, Collin Hollis and special friend Lauren Epps, Colten Hollis and special friend Amber McBride, and Amber Reed; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Chris Ramsey, Matt Ramsey, Justin Hollis, Carson Hollis, Collin Hollis, Colten Hollis, Chad McCready, Chris Byrd, Jonathan Hebert and Tyler Esters. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Johnson, Lynn Dowden, Tony Martin, Joe Lowe, Orin Stroud, Troy Morren, Gary Ashmore and Billy Wayne Propes.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
