Dale Cupit's Obituary
A memorial service for Dale Cupit , 86, of Longview will be held Saturday, June 12th at 4 PM at Ford Chapel, First Baptist Church of Longview. Mr. Cupit died June 9th following a brief illness. A private interment service will be held earlier Saturday at Rosewood Park Cemetery.
Mr. Cupit was born November 28, 1917 to I.V. and Lillie Scott Cupit in San Augustine County Texas. He received a full basketball scholarship to Stephen F. Austin in 1937, graduating in 1941 with a BS degree in mathematics. Shortly after graduating from college and a brief career as a high school teacher, he was drafted into the United States Army.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre of Operations. He served as a First Lieutenant, and as a forward observer in Field Artillery. Mr. Cupit experienced the Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes and Rhineland Campaigns, and the Campaign into Central Europe. He was with the first forward elements that crossed the Bridge at Remagan.
Upon returning from the War, Mr. Cupit and his wife bought a grocery and market in Carthage, Texas. He became a Mason and a member of the Lion?s Club there. In 1980, he and his wife retired and moved from Orange to Longview.
Mr. Cupit is survived by one son Herdy Cupit, and his wife Jo, of Longview. He had three grandchildren, Courtney Long and her husband Nathan, Conner Cupit and his wife Lara of Dallas, and Cathryn Morgan and her husband Capt. Jason Morgan of Beaufort, SC. He had three great grandchildren, Harrison, Ben, and Lily Long of Longview.
Mr. Cupit remained an avid sports fan until his death. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather, and shall be greatly missed by his family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, La Nell Cupit.
The family wishes to thank their many friends and Mr. Cupit?s care-givers for their support throughout his illness.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Wee Learn Center of the First Baptist Church of Longview or to the Highway 80 Rescue Mission of Longview.
Family visitation will be at Rader Funeral Home Friday evening 6 to 7:30 PM.
