Claude Owens' Obituary
Graveside services for Claude Owens, 88, of Longview, will be 11 AM Monday in the Winfield Cemetery, Winfield, Texas. Rader Funeral Home in charge of services.
The family will greet friends from 3 to 4 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Owens died Saturday morning in a local hospital.
A native of Groesbeck, Texas, he was born July 28, 1914 and had lived in Longview since 1975. He gradu-ated from Crozier Technical School in Dallas and then East Texas State University in Com-merce which he attended on a four year football scholarship. He received his BS and MS from East Texas State. Mr. Owens was a professor and football coach at Kilgore College for 20 years and then moved to Richardson, Texas and helped establish Dallas County Community College where he retired. Upon retirement he returned to Longview, Texas. He was a member of Oakland Heights Baptist Church, Oil Patch RV Club and member of the Kilgore East Texas chapter of Southwest officials, American Vocational Assn., American Technological Assn, Texas Technological Assn, Texas Jr. College Teachers Assn., and Past President of Texas Assn of Post/Secondary School Administrators. Mr. Owens served his country during WWII in the US Navy.
Survivors include his wife: Helon of Longview; Son and daughter in law: Mike and Beth Owens of Denison; Daughter and son in law: Jane Ann and Scott Layton of Plano; Grandchildren: Drew Layton of Plano, Nick, Courtney and Sarah Owens of Denison; Sister in law: Dot Freeman of Arlington, TX and a number of nieces and nephews.
