Clarence Edward Simmons' Obituary
Funeral services for Clarence Edward Simmons, 91, of Longview, will be held at 2 PM Friday at Rader Funeral Home Chapel in Longview with Revered James Pierce officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Park Cemetery. Mr. Simmons was born July 25, 1919 in Browndel, Texas to John W. Simmons and Mary Jacobs Simmons, and passed away on August 29, 2010 in Longview.
Mr. Simmons was a US Navy veteran, serving during World War II in the North Atlantic. He worked in Houston for Southern Pacific Railroad from the age of 15 until he began his Navy service on March 9, 1942. He married before the war to Dorothy Joneson and they had one son. The marriage ended during his military service. Following the war, Mr. Simmons became the traffic manager for Lone Star Steel in Lone Star, Texas where he met and then married Martha Lee Hamilton. They had four children. After leaving Lone Star Steel, he joined Consolidated Western Steel in Orange, Texas, Then he went to work for the Aluminum Company of America in Port Lavaca, Texas. Alcoa took him to Rockdale, TX, Evansville, IN, Vancouver, WA, Geelong, Australia and then the home office in Pittsburg, PA. After 14 years with Alcoa, he started a new career with a close friend from Part Lavaca, E. Jack Walton. Mr. Simmons managed E. Jack Walton Trucking Company in Midland, TX, then was transferred to Houston where he was made executive vice president of Walton and Son Stevedoring Company. Mr. Simmons then started Simmons Transport Inc. in Kilgore. He and Martha retired to Longview in 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Martha; his sister, Gladys Dee Walker; sons, Robert W. Simmons, Joseph E. Simmons and John W. Simmons II; daughters, Suzanne Carter and son in law Roy W. Carter and Linda Carol Simmons; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Clarence will be missed.
