Chestene S. Oney
Memorial services for Chestene S. Oney, 90, of Longview will be held at 2:00 p.m.on Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home 1617 Judson Road with Dick Summers officiating. Chestene, affectionately known as "Mammy" by her family members, passed away on Sunday, November 21.
Chestene was born in Hallsville, Texas on April 16, 1920 to John and Rosa Jackson Skinner. She attended Hallsville schools. Chestene married Willard Allen Oney on February 16, 1940. They owned and operated Oney's Appliance Service during the 1950's and 60's. She later was a bookkeeper for Longview Flower Shop until her retirement in 1988 when she joyously began babysitting grandchildren full time.
Chestene was a devoted and active member of First Church of Christ, Scientist for almost 60 years. Although she was an avid reader, especially of her religious studies, she was also physically active all of her life. As a girl she played softball and spent time with friends, but she also at a very early age began working in the fields picking cotton with the rest of her family. When she was old enough, she began attending dances and never lost the love for them. She learned to piece quilts, sew and cook. When she asked to take piano lessons he mother agreed. But after only two lessons, Grandmother told her that she couldn't afford them anymore. Instead of brooding about the change of events, Chestene built on those lessons and continued practicing her musical talent. She was a good student of everything she learned and never cut corners. Principle was her standard always.
Self improvement was essential in Chestene's eyes. When she was in her 30's she took a modeling course and voice lessons. Her motive was never to stand out or to receive applause but to blend with others for the good of all.
Chestene was not only proficient in household and feminine interests. She also had a wide array of tools, including a chain saw, and she knew how to use them. She was crackerjack carpenter, a sharp businesswoman and she knew had the most natural ability to display common sense in any given situation. Her wisdom was unequalled. No matter what problem we took to her, we were instantly comforted and reassured. Her Christly strength and compassion were a shining example to us all.
She was intently interested in world affairs, enjoying thoughtful and lively discussions on any topic. While she held her ground on what she believed in, she was also incredibly gentle, unassuming and private.;
She loved good movies that were uplifting and moral. Nothing thrilled her more than to have company watch a movie with her.
Chestene faced much adversity in her life but never, ever complained . She never burdened her children. This dignified lady lived a life of grace and we, her family, are so blessed to have been given this precious gift known as Mother and Mammy.
In addition to her parents and husband, Chestene was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Those remaining to cherish her memory are her children; Evan Michael Oney of Longview and his children, Angela, Laura Leigh and David; Ava Carolyn Rook and her husband Moreland of Longview and their children, Debby, Brian and Laura Lyn; Donna Frances Spencer of Irving and her children, Jackie, Chris and Nick. She is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
"Who can find a virtous woman? For her price is far above rubies….she looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not of the bread of idelness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed"… Prov31
