I’m very touched by the kind words of all these strangers. My grandfather, or Pa, as I always called him, was an inspiration to me. I lost my own father when I was young and Pa served as my model for what it looked and felt like to be a man in the world. I’m forever in debt.
I just met Mr. Fant in late Jan when I became a volunteer at Summer Meadows. I came every Monday to check on him and talk for a little while. Sometimes if he didn’t want to talk I sat and held his hand. He stole my heart because he reminded me so much of my own Daddy. You will always be missed Charlie!
I had the privilege of working with Charlie K, and many other ironworker brothers during my time in the building trades. First met him during the brewery work in the early 70's. Charlie was not a typical ironworker - always positive, and truly interesting fellow to be around. He exhibited that same positive attitude in his later years, and I was always pleased to see him and spent a few minutes in conversation.
I did not realize until I read these tributes that his lady friend was Leigh and Cheri's mom.
I know that she meant a great deal to him, and I recognize that happy companionship is a wonderful thing at any stage of our lives.

I can remember the last time I talked with Charlie Kay he told me that he hoped he could make it to 100. He really tried hard and came mighty close. He was a very dear friend that I enjoyed talking with every time I got the chance. Back when I was a kid in Jefferson, I would be at his mother's (Miss Mary Fant) home and he would come by. We would just sit there on the little front porch and talk for hours. Charlie Kay was Miss Mary's baby and favorite child. She would let you know that quickly. We will all miss Charlie Kay greatly.

We are so grateful for the companionship and affection Charlie shared with our mother after both had lost their spouses. Mother's final years were happy ones.
