Charles Vernon Elms
Funeral services for Charles Vernon Elms, 76, of Longview will be held 10 a.m., Monday, March 14, 2011, at Oakland Heights Baptist Church of Longview, with the Rev. Kevin Bright officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Park. He passed away Thursday, March 10, from injuries received in a tractor accident.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, March 13, at the funeral home.
Mr. Elms was born September 10, 1934 in Upshur County, TX to Whit and Violet Elms. He was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army and was recalled during the Cuban Crisis. Mr. Elms retired from Lone Star Steel and Pine Tree ISD.
He was an active member of Oakland Heights Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Laverne Fennell Elms of Longview, son Randall Todd Elms of Dallas, and his brother Roland Elms of Gilmer.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, his brother Richard Elms, his son
Barry Whit Elms and his beloved mother-in-law, Faye Fennell.
He loved traveling with the Loblolly Sam's RV group, volunteering at Pine Tree Lodge Nursing Home and with the Oakland Heights Benevolence Group.
He enjoyed deer hunting with Charles and Nancy Bisese and quail hunting with Royce Nelson, his close friends.
He appeared tough on the outside but had a heart of gold. He loved life and was known for teasing and pulling pranks on people. He was affectionately known as "Dude" to many of his family members and friends and Uncle Dude or Dudie to his nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oakland Heights Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 1607 Judson Rd., 75601.
