Charles Raymond Schmitt's Obituary
Charles R. Schmitt passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2005. ?Chuck? was born on May 24, 1914, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Catherine Bost Schmitt, his wife, Peggy Rodfong Schmitt, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. He is survived by his two sons, Charles D. and wife, Marlee, of Longview, Texas; Arthur and his wife, Francine, of Wheeling, West Virginia; three daughters, Marian Loftus and husband, Patrick of Montgomery, Texas, Melissa Newman of Longview, Texas and Tina Escher and husband, Ray of Brewster, Massachusetts. Survivors also include 19 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, two brothers, Frederick Schmitt of New Waterford, Ohio and Bernard Schmitt of Hanover, Ohio. As a youth, Chuck?s family moved to Midland, PA. He graduated from Midland High School in 1934. Chuck retired from Crucible Steel Company in Midland in 1969 as Vice-President of Operations. He then moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, where he served as Vice-President/Works manager for Empire-Detroit Steel, retiring in 1981 and moving to Longview, Texas to be near his children. He has resided in Montgomery, Texas for the past four years.
During his lifetime, he was very active in civic, social, religious, and professional organizations. Chuck was a life-long Pittsburgh Steeler fan and an avid tennis player. He and his wife, Peggy, were co-founders in establishing ?Tennis and Crumpets? in Portsmouth, Ohio and ?Tennis and Tacos? in Longview, Texas, both major fundraisers for various charities.
He had a zest for life and his greatest pleasure was spending time with his family.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 PM Thursday, January 27, at Rader Funeral Home in Longview. There will be a visitation at 6 PM, followed by rosary and wake service at 7 PM, Friday, January 28, at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Plantersville, Texas, with Mass of Christian Burial being held at 10:30 AM Saturday, January 29, at St. Mary?s Catholic Church with Rev. Edward J. Kucera, Jr. officiating with burial following at St. Mary?s Cemetery under direction of Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home of Navasota.
