The services for Charles Dalton Malone, 80, will be Wednesday, September 25, 2013 in the chapel of Rader Funeral Home with Reverend David Farmer, Associate Pastor of First Christian Church of Longview. Burial will be at Gum Springs Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 pm Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Rader Funeral Home.
Mr. Malone was born November 23, 1932, in Longview and died September 21, 2013, in Longview. He attended Gum Springs Elementary School until the 7th grade. He then went to Longview Independent School District where he participated in both football and baseball under Coach Maco Stewart. After graduating from Longview High School in 1950, he began working at the Texas and Pacific Railway serving an apprenticeship. Mr. Malone married the love of his life, JoAnn Long in July of 1952. In March of 1953 he was drafted into the Army. He served for two years at Fort Bliss in El Paso. During this time he played service football which led him to receiving a full athletic scholarship to Louisiana Tech. In 1960, he graduated with a B.A. Degree in Math and Chemistry. At that time, he returned to Longview and finished his apprenticeship with Texas and Pacific Railway. In May of 1961, he went to work at Eastman Kodak as a Recreational Assistant. Beginning in 1967 he worked in Personnel. He was involved in the hiring and recruitment of new employees. In 1977 Mr. Malone became Manager of Personnel Benefits. He was over Employee Services from 1979 until his retirement in 1998.
Mr. Malone was a longtime official in football, basketball, and baseball in the East Texas area. He served as assigning secretary of the East Texas Chapter of the SFOA for many years. The highlight of his officiating was being selected to work a high school state championship in both football and baseball. He was a member at First Christian Church in Longview. Hunting, fishing, and farming were his favorite pastimes. As an avid sports fan, he supported the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, and Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
Mr. Malone was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, who enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleo and Pauline Malone, and brother, David Malone. Mr. Malone is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jo Ann Long Malone; son Bart and his wife Piper, of Longview, son Andy and his wife Leslie, of Lewisville, TX; grandchildren Chris and his wife Joyce, Paige, Chad, Rylee, Makenzi Lewis-Johnson, Kennedy, and Hunter. He was looking forward to the arrival of his first great granddaughter, Charlee Rae in February. His siblings include Marvin and wife, Janice Malone, Mildred Brown, Nancy Sue English, Andy and wife, Suzanne Malone, Malcolm and wife, Jerry Malone, John Woody and wife, Linda Malone, Linda Benson, Jerry Malone, Danny and wife, Nancy Malone, Gayle and husband, Bobby Riley, Sheryl and husband, Larry Sims, and sister-in-law, Martha Malone. He was Uncle Charlie to numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge his lifelong friends, Phil and Marilyn Kennedy and Sue Mardis and the late Rigg Mardis.
Serving as pallbearers will be Red Brown, William Brown, Billy Elliott, Sewell Street, Carroll Shipp, and Bob Grace. Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Williams and the men of the Cornerstone Sunday School Class of First Christian Church.
