Charles Hubert Johnson
7/5/1929 - 10/24/2017
Charles Hubert Johnson peacefully passed away October 24, 2017 in Henderson, TX at his home of 60 years. Charles was a generous soul helping anyone he could expecting nothing in return. A simple man with a big heart concerned for others first. He had an inner strength founded on his Christian faith and through his last days was patiently waiting for God, reminding God daily that he was ready. He possessed a keen sense of humor and quick wit and had no small amount of determination. He was a loving father, generous grandfather, brother and friend.
He was born to Lonnie Kyle and Alma Slayton Johnson in an oil field encampment tent on July 5, 1929 in Mildred, TX during the oil boom as his family made their way to East Texas settling in New London. Charles and his siblings narrowly escaped the explosion at New London School having left the building only moments before it occurred. He served his country in the US Navy as a Seaman on the USS Shenandoah as a Gunnery and Quarter Master and manned a 5"- 38 cal. cannon from the ships turret during WWII.
After his military service, he married Johnnie Ruth Collins from Leveretts Chapel in 1949. They moved to Overton where he founded Johnson Electric Company and purchased and operated the Overton Hotel. Charles and Johnnie had two children, Barry Hubert and Terry Ruth Johnson. His second marriage was to Ruby Ann Hayes in 1960 resulting in their move to Henderson where he resided until his death. For fifty years, his electrical skills served him well in the oil field, offshore and at the Valdez Terminal in Alaska. He and Ruby also enjoyed cattle ranching together. In later years, he also owned Jet Sandblasting Company in Kilgore, Charles loved his East Texas roots and made many friends along his journey. During his later years, Charles loved his hobby as a trader and loved to ride the roads and look for opportunities to buy and sell farm equipment.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lonnie Kyle in 1987, Bobby Gene in 1999, sister Marcheta, son Barry in1987, wife Ruby Ann in 2002 and brother-in-law Randy Reagh in 2011.
