Charles Everett Hill's Obituary
Surrounded by his loving family, Charles Everett Hill of Longview, Texas, passed away on the evening of the 31st of December 2016.
Charles was born on October 22, 1925, near Morris, Oklahoma to parents Walter Taylor Hill and Florence Mae Hill, née Dukes. After his mother died in 1931, he lived temporarily with older sisters Dosha, Maudie and Margaret until he moved in permanently with Uncle Clarence and Aunt Maud Brady of Haskell, Oklahoma. He got involved with Boy Scouts activities, lettered in football and basketball and played on the American Legion baseball team. He was president of the 4-H Club and was elected as class president for two years in a row.
Upon graduating from high school in May 1944, Charles was drafted into the Army and trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was eventually assigned to the 3rd Armored Division, 707th Tank Battalion, in its drive across France and Germany. After the war, he was kept in the army of occupation for a year and helped to release labor camp prisoners.
Charles was honorably discharged in June, 1946 and went to college, gaining a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Tulsa. After graduating in 1950, Charles took a job with a steel company in St. Louis, Missouri and in 1954, was transferred to Texas to serve as Vice-President and General Manager. Charles started his own pipe and steel business in the 70’s and moved to Longview in 1978. Hill Pipe and Steel at Eastman Rd and I-20 prospered until Charles’ retirement in 2001.
For many years, Charles was involved with the Longview chapter of the disability charity AMBUCS, served as an elder and Sunday School teacher at Northside Church of Christ and for the last 12 years was an active member of the Alpine Church of Christ.
Charles is survived by his wife Emily Ann Hill, née German (Longview), sons Charles Edward ‘Eddie’ Hill (Plano) and Bruce Howard Hill (Durant) and three step-children Laura Bissell, née Bucklin (Harrogate, England), Scott Bucklin (Dallas) and Jason Bucklin (Dallas), 15 grand-children Rachel, Carrie, Morna, Stephanie, Aaron, Stacy, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Melissa, Michelle, Jeff, Beth, Christopher, Max, Brandon and Silas and 18 great grand-children.
The Hill Family wishes to extend thanks to dear friend Cricket Molloy, Dr Srinivas Rangu, the staff of Good Shepherd Hospital, Treviso Transitional Care and Compass Hospice of East Texas.
The funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017 at Rader Funeral Home Chapel, 1617 Judson Road, Longview, TX 75601, with visitation starting an hour before the service. Graveside services will follow at Rosewood Park Cemetery, 1884 FM Rd 1844, Longview, 75605.
