Chalres Edward Rice's Obituary
Charles Edward "Son" Rice, Sr.
Charles was born in Alabama and spent his early years helping make a living for family fishing the Tom-bigbee river. He came to Texas in 1941 as a member of the 741st tank battalion where he met his loving Martha. They had 68 years together before mom passed in March 2010. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Hearts while serving in the Euorpean Campaign during WWII. After the war he returned to Texas and went to work for Lone Star Nat-ural Gas Co. He came to the Long-view area in 1956 where he worked for the next 30 years retiring in 1986 with 41 years of service. He moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, living there for the next 11 years. He moved back to the Hallsville area in 1997 where he worked his place up until his death. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha Lovella Carlile Rice; son, Charles Edward Rice, Jr.; and his only sister, Mary Evelen Rice Powell. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Russell and husband Reed of Dallas; son, Robert Dale Rice and wife Phyllis of Porter; son, Joe Nelson Rice and wife, Beverly of Hallsville and daughter-in-law, Betty Rice of Longview; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and one niece, Louise Harrell of Mobile, AL. He was a member of the Judson Road Church of Christ.
Graveside services will be held at 10 AM Friday, September 23, 2011 at Memory Park. Burial will follow under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
