Cassandra Cobb Northcutt's Obituary
Longview, Texas – Cassandra Cobb Northcutt, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and community leader passed away on April 7, 2025; She was 87 years old.
Born in Wichita Falls, Texas on August 29, 1937, to Ruth Wiseman and Dan Gordon Cobb, Cassandra spent her early years on a ranch in Levelland, Texas, where her father raised sheep and cattle. In December 1946, her family moved to the Diamond Bar Cattle Ranch in the Gila wilderness of southwest New Mexico, before eventually returning to Texas. After graduating from Seminole High School in Seminole, Texas, Cassandra earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Baylor University where she met her true love, LeGrande Northcutt. The couple married in 1958, and together they raised their family in Longview, Texas, where they were married for 62 years.
Cassandra was a true pioneer, characterized by her grit, determination, and no-nonsense approach to life. Growing up on a ranch without indoor plumbing and with electricity powered by a windmill, she developed a strong sense of independence and a relentless drive to tackle any challenge that came her way. A lifelong learner, she was always curious about the how’s and the why’s of the world, and she brought that same determination to everything she did. Whether it was helping a friend or taking on community projects, if Cassandra was involved, you could be sure it would get done. She was also ahead of her time sporting her signature blue fingernail polish for thirty years.
A committed and active member of her community, Cassandra served on the LISD Board of Trustees, the Gregg County Appraisal District Board of Directors, and as a member of various organizations, including the Junior League, the Green Thumb Garden Club, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Daughters of the American Revolution. For over forty years, she was a passionate storyteller, serving as a charter member and president of the Longview Story League from 1977 to 1978.
Cassandra’s deep Christian faith was at the core of her life. A long-time and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Longview, she served in many capacities, including as a 10th-grade Sunday School teacher, choir member, and on numerous church committees. Her service extended beyond her local church, as she was involved in Baptist causes and served on the Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission and the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Cassandra was also devoted to her alma mater, Baylor University, where she and LeGrande established the Northcutt Lecture Series at the Baylor School of Christian Music.
In addition to her community and faith commitments, Cassandra cherished her family deeply. She and LeGrande enjoyed traveling with their children and grandchildren, taking memorable trips to places such as Red River, NM, England, Yellowstone, and the Pacific Northwest. They also shared many vacations with their close-knit “Supper Club” friends, including visits to the Dixie Dude Ranch, Navarre Beach, FL, Washington, DC, and many parts of Europe.
Cassandra was predeceased by her parents, Ruth and Gordon Cobb, her husband, J. LeGrande Northcutt, sister-in-law, Judy Cobb, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, W. D. Northcutt, III and Susanne Northcutt.
