Carol Lynn Lay Fletcher's Obituary
Carol Lynn Lay Fletcher passed away at home in Conroe, Texas on February 7, 2024. Ms. Fletcher was born in Houston October 27, 1939, the daughter of Roy Livingston Lay, Sr. and Julia Merle Morgan Lay. She attended Houston public schools until moving to Greenwich, Connecticut in 1954, where she graduated from Greenwich High School. Thereafter she earned an associate’s degree from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri in 1959 and her bachelor’s in Commerce from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in 1961. After graduating, she worked for the National Security Agency before marrying Bill Fletcher in 1968. After their divorce, she returned to Texas, settling in Houston and then eventually in Conroe. Over the last several decades of her life, she enjoyed her great passions of international travel, the opera, and her beloved cats. She was especially active as a five-decade season ticket holder and volunteer at the Houston Grand Opera, where she worked in archives and was active in its “Buddy” program that mentored members of its opera studio – many of whom went on to enjoy international fame. She is survived by her sister Julianne Williams, her brother Robert Lay, her nephews Rick Williams, David Williams, Morgan Lay, Sergei Lay, and Lucas Lay and her nieces Sherry Williams, Lisa Ortega, Ashley Myles, and Tatyana Lay. The family encourages friends to honor her memory by donating to Camphill Village and the Houston Grand Opera.
