Carl Anthony Westerman's Obituary
Carl Anthony Westerman passed away May 13, 2023, at his home at the age of 91 surrounded by his family. Carl was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Carl George and Loretta Meis Westerman. His family packed up and moved to Oklahoma City when they were given a home by his Aunt Viola in 1943, when she was called to join the convent. He graduated from John Carrol High School in Oklahoma City and attended St. Benedicts College before he was drafted in 1953. He served in the US Army during the Korean War in Germany attaining the rank of Corporal. He was very proud of his military service and often said that his service was one of the best things that he had ever done and made him the man he was. He returned to Oklahoma City and with hard work and the GI Bill he graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1958 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering.
Before graduating, he attended a YMCA dance and fell in love with a beautiful young lady whose picture he had seen in The Daily Oklahoma. He married Jacquelyn Smith on December 27, 1957. He and Jacque had two daughters. After graduating, Carl took a job in Bakersfield, Texas for Ambassador Oil. He was later transferred to Ft. Worth and took a job with General American Oil Company. In 1962, he was transferred to their Gladewater Office where he and Jacque immediately fell in love with East Texas. Carl was taken with the action and adventure that was found in the East Texas Oilfield and in 1964 became an independent oilman. He worked through the 1960’s and 1970’s as an independent East Texas Operator, mostly doing his own manual labor on his leases often with the assistance of “Jacque and the girls”. He loved working in the field. In 1983 when things were tough in the oil industry, Carl formed CW Resources, Inc. and became a Wildcatter. Throughout is career, Carl’s ideas and intellect let to many discoveries and many oil and gas well in Texas and Louisiana. He was proud that he had been able to stay in business through the rough times to help in a small way to keep the East Texas oil economy moving when times were tough. After Jacque’s passing in 1999, Carl married Mary Hesler in 2001. He and Mary worked, traveled with friends, and spent time on the farm until Mary’s death in 2018. Carl touched many lives with his kindness, humor, and generosity.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents, his wives Jacque and Mary, two brothers, Robert and Howard Westerman, and his stepdaughter Katie Hesler.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved sisters, Jean Craig and Marta Carson; daughters Michelle and husband Bruce Cook, Dawne and husband David Tadlock, stepdaughters Alyson and husband Adrian Espinoza Diaz and Sarah and husband Brent Pemberton. Nine grandchildren Gray Cook, Ashley Cook Ellis, Samuel Tadlock, Katie Tadlock Bogan, John Tadlock, Anne Tadlock Jonas Lucas, Gabriel Espinoza Diaz, Lucy Espinoza Diaz and Will Pemberton: six great-grandsons and many nieces, nephew and friends that he loved dearly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, preceded by a Rosary at 1:30 pm. A private family burial will be held at Rosewood Park in Longview. The family wishes to express its thanks to his longtime caregiver and friend, Evelyn Parker, as well as the Comfort Keepers that watched over him at night.
