Byron Sherrill Horne's Obituary
A Memorial service for Byron Sherrill Horne, 68, of Longview, will be held Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at Longview Evangelical Presbyterian Church with the Reverends Doug Ashley, Shelley Kral and Beau Sullivan officiating. The family will receive friends prior to and after the service.
Byron passed away peacefully while surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday, May 29. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Manly Horne and Roberta Rutherford of Morehead City, North Carolina.
He was born on August 20, 1949 in Fayetteville, North Carolina and grew up in Morehead City, North Carolina.
He attended North Carolina State University where he majored in Product Design. After college, he became a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army, 17th Engineer Battalion of the 2nd Armored Division and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas from 1973-74.
While in the Army, Byron met his wife Dorothy on a blind date. They married on January 15, 1977, and began their life together in Dallas, Texas, where he worked for the Texas Workforce Commission. In 1986, the Horne family moved to Longview, Texas with their two young daughters, Amanda and Karly. They joined First Presbyterian Church, and he played guitar and sang in the praise band for 18 years as well as delivered the children’s sermons for many years. In recent years he became a member of Longview Evangelical Presbyterian Church where he continued playing in the praise band.
Byron’s passions were many. He entertained and spread joy to children and adults alike through many avenues. He was an actor in many plays at Longview Community Theater, and also well known to the children of Longview through his multiple personae: BeeRon the Clown, Elvis Presley, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and Charles Dickens, just to name a few. He was an amazing guitarist, loved all genre of music and could play anything by ear.
Byron faithfully walked closely with the Lord through his journey with Alzheimer’s for 8 years.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dorothy Horne; daughters Amanda Nance and husband Mark of Denton, TX; daughter Karly Brooks and husband Trey of Forney, TX; sister Marilyn Keatts and husband Wade of Newport, North Carolina; stepbrother Chris Rutherford and wife Linda of Summerville, SC; and his four beloved grandsons: Nathaniel Nance, Karl Nance, Cannon Brooks and Case Brooks, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Longview Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
