Betty Hill Vaughan's Obituary
Memorial Services for Betty Vaughan, a long-time resident of Longview, will be held on January 6th at First Presbyterian Church, Longview, Texas at 2 p.m. Betty passed away peacefully on December 23 at a local memory care facility.
Born on August 28,1928 to T.D. and Lois Hill, Betty grew up in Elysian Fields with her sister, Margie Tompkins of Mineola. She excelled in sports and was valedictorian of her graduating class. Betty met John Bob Vaughan at a football game between Elysian Fields and Waskom and they married after she received her Nursing degree from Centenary College. Betty and John Bob lived in Austin where he completed his undergraduate degree from UT and in Galveston for Medical School. They always wanted to return to East Texas and moved to Longview where John Bob opened his Internal Medicine practice with Sole Coleman.
Betty loved to be with friends and family and supported many church and local organizations. She was involved with the Junior League where she volunteered at the original Bargain Box for many years. She was President of the Good Shepherd Medical Auxiliary which included wives of local doctors who raised money for charities. She was President of the Magnolia Garden Club, was a member of the Lobo Booster club and the “Thursday Bridge Club”. She served the First Presbyterian Church in many ways including being a Session member of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Presbyterian Woman’s Group, and a youth volunteer where for 10 years she opened her home to bible study for young women. She traveled extensively with family and friends and could often be seen on her daily walks throughout her neighborhood.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Robert Lloyd Vaughan, and her parents. She is survived by her children and their families including Johnny and Peggy Vaughan of Longview, Scott and Kelly Vaughan of Longview, Gayle and Jeff Barnes of Dallas, Gary Vaughan of Burnet, sister Margie Tompkins of Mineola and cousin Nancy Mackey of Longview. Betty loved her grandchildren Adam Vaughan (Rebecca), Rachel Barnes Timmins (Ty), Art Barnes, Andrew Barnes, Meredith Barnes, Emily Vaughan Ciekot (Cory), Justin Vaughan and three great grandchildren.
