Betty Kitchens' Obituary
Betty Jane (Cox) Kitchens of Longview passed into the loving arms of our Lord on June 7, 2024. She was 96 years old.
Betty was born on September 29, 1927, in Fordyce, Arkansas. She and her family lived there until she was 9. They moved to Eunice, Louisiana during the Depression where her father was fortunate enough to take a job with a paper company. Betty attended Eunice High School where she was a cheerleader in her senior year. She attended Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.
Betty was a teacher and speech therapist for the Longview Independent School District from 1969 until her retirement in May of 1992. She was a member and past president of the Theta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators and a Daughter of the Confederacy. She was a member of and regularly attended services at Longview First United Methodist Church. In her retirement years, Betty enjoyed reading, honing her culinary skills, traveling internationally and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.
Betty was preceded in death by her father, Samuel Sunset Cox, mother, Ada Marie Cox and sister, Beverly Colomb. She is survived by her daughter, Harriett Fletcher, son Thomas Kitchens, grandson, Kerry Jon Fletcher, grandson, Matthew Kitchens, granddaughter Katherine Armendinger and five great-grandchildren, Sadie Fletcher, Emma Fletcher, Landon Bennet Coleman, Kendall Kitchens and Declan Kitchens.
A Memorial Service will be held at Rader Funeral Home in Longview on Friday, June 28, 2024, starting at 2PM. The Reverend Dr. Debbie Tipps from Longview First United Methodist Church will be officiating.
