Barbara Jo (Cheek) Williams' Obituary
Barbara Jo (Cheek) Williams was born on January 23, 1935 and died on April 30, 2026 at the age of 91. She was born in Timpson, Texas to Guyrene (Rettig) and Houston Cheek but grew up in Louisiana. She graduated from Many High School in Many, Louisiana and Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, Louisiana where she was an active member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. After graduation, she taught school in South Louisiana, worked retail in Houston, worked for SWEPCO in Marshall, and finally ended up in Longview where she managed the cafeteria at Texas Eastman. At Eastman, she met the love of her life, Archie D. Williams. They married after a whirlwind courtship and soon welcomed their only child, Scott. After his birth, she became a stay-at-home mom and was very active with her hobbies – arts/crafts home business, Winterfield Garden Club member for many years, dulcimer lessons, home room mother every year her son was at Mozelle Johnston elementary, and helping at Winterfield Methodist Church where she was a long-time member.
For a birthday gift, Barbara and Archie enrolled in ballroom dancing lessons, taught by local Alicia Cantrele. After much practice, they exceled at ballroom dancing, spent lots of time on the dance floor and at their dance club, and enjoyed several private ballroom dance cruises. If there was a dance floor, they would be on it – and they are dancing together again. They also loved to travel, take cruises, and spend time at their lake house on Lake Cherokee. She thoroughly enjoyed her grandkids and always had special activities for them. She spent her last few years at Buckner Westminster. The family would like to thank all her friends at Buckner and the Buckner staff for their care and support over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Guy Cheek, and her husband (Archie) of 53 years. She is survived by her brother, Tom Cheek, her son Scott and wife Sharon, her granddaughter Charlotte Main and husband Alex, her grandson Archie (Gus) Williams, and her great grandson, Kellin Main.
There will be a private family service at a later date.
