Arthur Hassig's Obituary
Arthur Ramos Hassig went to his heavenly home April 2, 2019. He had just celebrated his 93rd birthday, the previous week with family. Art was born March 22, 1926 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, to John and Lydia Hassig. He worked on the family farm in his younger years, but moved to the “big city” when he graduated from Leo High School. However, it was not long before he joined the Air Force, and following, obtained his degree from Purdue University. He married Betty Lou in 1949 in Mansfield, Ohio, where they lived for 5 years and where their 3 children were born. They then moved to St. Petersburg, Florida for Art to work at Babcock & Wilcox as a draftsman. In 1961, the family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Art worked for many years and Sandia Laboratories. When he retired, he was offered a job in San Diego, CA for 2 years, where they enjoyed the sunshine and ocean breezes. After full retirement, the settled in East Texas, which was his home until he passed away. He was able to spend a summer in Hawaii as a volunteer with YWAM, and thoroughly enjoyed his time there. Art was a devoted husband, father, papa and truly a Godly man. He loved to study and discuss the Bible and was a member of Longview 1st Assembly for many years. He was also known for his dry wit and his smile.
Art was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Betty Lou Hassig; parents John and Lydia Hassig, and by 2 sisters and 5 brothers. Those left to cherish his memory are son, Jim Hassig and wife, Jean of Longview, TX; son, Greg Hassig and wife Sheila of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Linda Traywick and husband Rick of San Diego, CA; brothers, Herman Hassig and Wife Karlita of Ft. Wayne, IN and Don Hassig and wife Lois of Birmingham, AL. Grandchildren, Amber Kotcher and spouse Kris, Krissy Pcket and spouse Shawn, Joshua Traywick and spouse Ashley, Jason Hassig and wife Natalie, and Johnny Hassig; great grandchildren, Hannah and Jaden Pockett; many nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, including Alan and Velma DaMoude.
A funeral service for Art will be held at Rader Funeral home in Longview at 10 am on Saturday, April 6 with a visitation to start one hour prior at 9 am. Donations may be made to Pleasant Hills Children’s Home or Heartsway Hospice in Art’s memory.
