Arthur D. Mercer's Obituary
Arthur DeRick Mercer Jr., born August 8, 1919 to Bertha and Arthur D. Mercer Sr., died April 4, 2009, in Longview, TX. He was 89. Arthur grew up in Stamford, CT with his two sisters Betty and Virginia. A Sergeant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Arthur was stationed at Fort Bragg during WWII. He attended New York University, and worked for Metropolitan Life as a C.L.U. and office manager for over forty years. Arthur married the love of his life, Florence Kirstein Mercer, on June 8, 1945 in Black Mountain, N.C. As an active member of the Rotary Club, Arthur held a 16-year perfect attendance record. He was also a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Longview. Arthur enjoyed bridge, and played as often as possible. As a devoted grandfather, he spent the last twenty years of his life, loving and spoiling his granddaughters. He is survived by his wife: Florence, daughter: Janet Mercer-Smith, granddaughters: Julia, Rachel and Alison Mercer-Smith, sister: Virginia and her husband Chester Bradley, and nieces: Patricia Edmundson and Diane Warfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Longview or the Longview Rotary Club. A private, family service will be held at Rosewood Park on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 and will be followed by a memorial service held at 1:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Longview.
